A Q&A on Letter Club
----
In the later stages of building this space, we polled a few trusted friends for feedback. Wanted to make sure the subscription service was clear and made sense to everyone involved. Below are a few of the “tougher” questions we had to answer & which got me thinking…. these might be nice to share with new members + potential members as well.
Q: In general, my only q is about what im receiving as a subscriber...is it a print of what another member has sent? the original? am i the only one getting it or does every member get a copy? Basically is this a semi-anonymous, randomized pen pal service (aka a different 1 to 1 every time)?
A: it’s a photocopied print (on super nice weighted paper) of a Letter another member has sent in. All subscribers get that same copy monthly. That letter is chosen by us, at "headquarters", and then mailed out to all members (but the signature is kept anonymous to protect the selected members’ privacy.) Basically, this is a way for a member to blast out a creative piece via snail mail to reach ALL other members.
Q: I'm into that. In that case, things I'd be curious about as a subscriber:
a) If I'm signing up more on the CREATOR SIDE, how can I ensure that my art/letter reaches the other members if it's chosen by you? Is it random, merit-based, or themed? may get some frustrated creators if they keep sending without getting chosen
b) If I'm signing up more on the RECEIVER SIDE, how can I be sure that what I'm receiving is always the top content? How is the art/letter chosen? Is there any threat that what I get isn't just clever marketing for a project?
A: Wow, great question. The concept behind having folks send us their art/letter is ultimately because they want to. There is no guarantee that it will be the chosen piece, but the idea is that you sent it out, which is a huge accomplishment in it's self. It's neither random, merit-based, nor themed. Although we do send out a creative prompt every month, there is no promise that a piece gets chosen based on the theme; it's more of a way to encourage writing and ideas. As a way to have more Members' Letters/Art highlighted we'll be selecting snippets and pieces to broadcast on socials as well. No individual Letters are considered "content or top content" -- it's about our community being open to the idea that we started this Club because we have a vision for how best to connect to people more slowly. So, we will choose based on how we feel while reading/looking at the submission. It will never be based on pushing an agenda, but considered in the same way I view my music photography images when editing -- "how do I emotionally connect to this? Will other folk feel something will taking this in?" Hopefully people feel seen - if not by the wider community, at least in knowing we're with them here at Letter Club headquarters. We'll always be doing our best to celebrate a new member monthly.
